Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to take over a solid function -- including a strong, passionate team -- and lead it to provide a new level of strategic, proactive partnering in a growing global organization. We are a mid-sized company, with about 2700 employees worldwide, meaning your influence won't be confined to one small box; you will be an integrated HR leader, helping guide the entire function. The small but mighty HR team at Brocade is very progressive and can hold its own when stacked against that of any huge corporation. This role will grow as the company does (we almost doubled over the past year), although your success in this role could set you up to pursue various career paths within HR.

You'll oversee all aspects of compensation and benefits and, while you will assume hands-on ownership of a couple of areas, your main mission will be to provide the leadership and high level management to ensure Brocade remains an employer of choice in regions around the world. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid and deep experience in compensation and benefits, including global exposure, and the ideal candidate will also have a broad, well-rounded HR background. High tech industry experience is strongly preferred. We're looking for a professional with demonstrated management and leadership skills, as well as expertise in executive compensation and equity plans.

Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. provides the industry's leading platforms, solutions, and services for intelligently connecting, managing, and optimizing IT resources in shared storage environments. Our Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions give corporations (including the majority of the Global 500) the power to administer, manage, and move their most vital strategic asset: their information. Our environment is fast paced and you'll find a team that is results oriented and enjoys having fun along the way.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, Finance or other relevant field; an MBA is preferred.
  • Significant progressive compensation experience, including base salary, incentive plan design, executive and sales compensation plan design, and international compensation practices in global, public manufacturing corporations.
  • Extensive knowledge of business issues in public technology companies and a solid understanding of compensation practices in global technology industries, particularly equity compensation.
  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically as well as respond to day-to-day needs.
  • The ability to work with and influence senior leaders including executives and the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • The ability to coach, counsel, and mentor senior-level managers.
  • Solid working knowledge of a variety of computer applications, including MS Excel; HRIS experience is preferred.
  • A passionate, creative, and collaborative approach to leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a sense of humor.

What's in It for You

High impact -- you'll assume direction of a function that is highly responsive and technically sharp; where you can make your mark is in bringing to the function an even greater degree of proactivity and strategic partnering across the organization. Plenty of comp & benefits professionals can implement an agenda; we're looking for a leader who can create the agenda.

Progressive HR program -- with a focus on cultivating both performance and development, the department combines deep experience and best practices to be a true partner to the business. We've developed a culture in which you can enjoy a good deal of autonomy and have opportunities to be inventive and creative. You'll find strong camaraderie on the HR team and throughout Brocade.

Best of both worlds -- Brocade is neither a startup nor a huge juggernaut, meaning we're small enough to be nimble and non-bureaucratic, but we also offer the stability of almost 10 years of success and steady growth. We have broad, general guidelines rather than detailed SOPs and we hire people with the initiative and accountability to achieve goals using common sense and innovation. Our senior leaders are all very accessible and we all engage in a great deal of cross-functional work, ensuring a strong common vision.

Great work environment -- our corporate culture reflects our passion for integrity, excellence, and market leadership. We are a fast-paced, highly collaborative team able to embrace change and strive for best-in-class results on all of our endeavors. We also believe in enjoying one another's company in events that encourage networking, information sharing, and fun. We have broken ground, here in San Jose, on what will be a beautiful, state-of-the-art, 100% green facility that we plan to occupy in 2010.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect plus a few pleasant surprises, including an employee stock purchase program, education reimbursement, a fitness center, and more.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the Vice President of Human Resources, you will join an HR executive team that also includes leaders of Business Partnering, Learning & Development, HR Infrastructure, and Recruitment. All told the HR department has about 45 regular employees and another 15 to 25 contractors. You will provide direction to the Director of Benefits and Manager of Compensation, each of whom supervises a small team. While about 65% of our 2700 employees are here in the US, the rest are located in some 25 different countries.

This role does include a hands-on aspect -- you will own both executive compensation and equity/stock plans -- but your main objective will be to provide the leadership that will ensure a best-in-class comp & benefits function. In addition you will help lead the overall HR organization, not only ensuring that comp & benefits are well integrated with the other areas, but also contributing across all areas.

In addition to establishing Brocades compensation strategy globally, you will be our subject matter expert and provide advice on a wide range of issues related to the development and management of compensation in diverse regions around the world. Your role also will include mentoring people on your team, managing domestic and international vendors, and collaborating with the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.

Keys to Success

Comp & benefits may be an "order taking" function in some companies, but we'll look to you to ensure this function acts as a strategic business partner to departments across the organization. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Director of Compensation & Benefits, you will:

  • Embrace the HR team's commitment to performance, development, and collaboration.
  • Bring a high degree of poise and professionalism to interacting with senior leaders and board members.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and resource needs as we continue to grow at a fast clip.
